My intro to a new world I didn't know existed.
💯 Main Idea
When I was younger, I thought of the word as anarchy as terrorist or rioter in the street. It was always used as a pejorative whenever I heard it.
It always takes me aback when I think about the long, hard road from thinking about something to thinking differently about it.
Even now, after reading more about anarchism, I keep struggling with the pictures in my head every time I read, see, or think about the word.
Here’s the Wikipedia definition:
Anarchism is a political philosophy and movement that is skeptical of authority and rejects all involuntary, coercive forms of hierarchy. Anarchism calls for the abolition of the state, which it holds to be undesirable, unnecessary, and harmful.
Anarchism is simply the return to our natural human way of life before we settled down to become farmers, then created money, commerce, war, marriage, and everything else as a byproduct of the invention of personal property.
Government is just another response to how to operate a society with a bunch of humans with different goals.
Don’t get me wrong; I believe property rights and the protection of the individual is the ultimate goal of humanity. So I’m not suggesting we go back to living as hunter-gatherers (though we’d all be healthier and happier if we did).
The thing that resonates with me the most here is the destructiveness of government.
Government is run by humans, which means it will forever slide into corruption as those running the show will make decisions to benefit themselves.
This is just a law of human nature, and just like any biologist that studies chips or clownfish would explain a species they study, we must do the same of ourselves. We must accept our nature, accept our history, and think about it objectively rather than romantically or idealistically.
Idealism has killed more humans than anything, and at the hands of other humans.
The aha moment I’ve come to that is now the first principle of my thinking is this: government based on a monopoly through violence and enforcement is a violation of natural law.
On the flip side, governance through voluntary participation is the most natural human expression and will result in the most human flourishing and prosperity for all.
This is why free markets do more for humanity and government-controlled, regulated, and corrupted do worse.
